Like some Grado headphones; the RF-3s are a smack-you-in-the-face, brutal, rocking speaker. Klipsch is not everybody's cup of tea. I absolutely love them. IMO horns are a beautiful animal. Audition them if you can. Unless you get into the reference line or Palladium I don't like them. I would tend to recommend the Polk's in your case. I didn't seem to pick up as much ambient, high-frequency detail with the Klipsch bookshelves as the Polks.
For example, with the Polk's I was able to distinguish the sound of the denim of an actor's jeans rubbing together as he walked down a hallway, while the Klipsch speakers seemed to mute out some of these more miniscule details. One of the best things about HD audio codecs is small details like this. On the other hand, the Klipsch's had a warmer and more natural overall sound than the Polks. Comparatively speaking, music from the Klipsch speakers was silky smooth and heavenly to my ears, while the Polks not bad by any means sounded more "tinny.
I enjoyed the research. I have both and prefer the Klipsch. They have better highs You may not. They are completly different in my opinion. Skip both and get some Focals. Klipsch because of the horn tweeters will not give you a warm sound but i find them very good for music, especially if you have a nice sub to pair.
If at first you're not thrilled, move your speakers around a bit. Small changes can make a big difference. Move the speakers away from the walls a few inches.
Or push them back. Move them closer to each other. Or a little bit further apart. Angle them toward your seat a little more, or a little less. Still not thrilled? Don't give up yet. Maybe you just need to break your new speakers in a bit. Leave the music playing for several hours a few days in a row. See what your speakers sound like after a week or two of heavy use.
Step 3 might be to work on your room a bit. Try moving the sofa forward or backward a bit. Add a rug, drapes, or some other sound-absorbing materials. In the garage I have in-ceiling 4 Polk 3-ways with a Def. I remove the AW our door speaker and put them on my patio. The Polks are very clean sounding with a flat EQ The Kilpsch has a bunch more high and to me can sound harsh. Love the extra dB sensitive though However, I feel the AMP has a lot to do with how the speakers sound.
So does the room. You can take a crappy speaker and put it in an acoustic room and make it sound great. It all makes a difference. I have been a Polk fan for years bought ri a9 in love them but bought the martin logan. The design paradigm and performance perspectives are relative and for the most part non-arguable.
From personal experience however there is a significant departure from these two entities as regard customer support and post sales service provision with Polk audio a hands down winner. You can pretty much forget about post sales support from Klipsch and that's unfortunate. Pffffft, no. I purchased Polk Audio monitor 70's for my fronts ten years ago and found them to be flat, so 5 years ago, I purchased the Klipsch dual 8" woofer towers to replace them, sending the Polks to the back surround channels and WOW!
The new Klipsch fronts shined through with sounds never heard before. Cranking up the level input for the back surround Polks compensated for their reduced sensitivity. But at the end of the day, Klipsch shined through, revealing sounds never heard from years of Polk speakers at the helm I would like to find a pair of powered speakers that I could use with a Dell XPS desktop computer.
